FLOOD EVENT (13-15 May 2022)

NOTICE (4) 12:00hrs Sun 15 May 2022 | FINAL ISSUE

  • The SBSC Management Committee has continued to monitor river levels, flood warnings and rainfall in the Brisbane River catchments overnight and this morning.
  • There is no immediate or ongoing threat to the SBSC Facility as part of the recent flood event.
  • River levels at the St Lucia Flood Gauge peaked this morning at about 1.52 above MSL at about 08:34 hrs (15 May 2022), which is about 0.2m below minor flood levels (see: http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml)
  • River levels are expected to be below minor flooding levels over the next few days.
  • No further flood watch notices are to be issued in connection with this recent weather event. 

NOTICE (3) 22:45hrs Sat 14 May 2022

  • The SBSC Management Committee is continuing to monitor river levels, flood warnings and rainfall in the Brisbane River catchments

  • River levels at the St Lucia Flood Gauge peaked this evening at about 2.29m above MSL at about 21:10 hrs (14 May 2022), with minor flooding and water rising above the sea wall at SBSC (see: http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml)
  • River levels are expected to rise again to minor flooding levels at the high tide tomorrow morning about 9:15am.
  • Please monitor the SBSC flood watch page (https://www.sbsc.org.au/news/flood-watch/) and emails over the weekend in case we need to execute our flood plan https://www.sbsc.org.au/about/flood-plans/.
  • It is now unliklely that any evacuation of high value equipment will be needed tomorrow morning (Sun 15 May 2022).

FLOOD EVENT (25 FEB- 3 MAR 2022)

NOTICE (19) 18:00 hrs Thu 3 Mar 2022 | FINAL ISSUE 

  • Water levels continue to be close to the base of the flag pole - well away from the clubhouse.
  • Basic power has been restored via powerpoints only.
  • Council may assist with a wash-out of the upstream laneway, boat storage area and showers tomorrow Friday.    
  • Please register for the Working bee on Saturday morning to clean up the clubhouse and to return upstairs equipment.

NOTICE (18) 18:00 hrs Wed 2 Mar 2022

  • Good news! Water levels are now well below the lower level of the club, with water lapping around the base of the flag pole.
  • An initial inspection by Commodore John Price (in his capacity as a Registered Architect) is that only minimal structural damage is apparent. There appears to be some subsidence and minor damage to doors and upstream walls.
  • There is some but not major quantities of silt in the lower level of the clubhouse, showers and on the rigging lawn.
  • We are making arrangements for the restoration of power and are seeking assistance to to conduct a wash-out of the boat storage area and showers on Friday.    
  • We are planning a Working bee on Saturday morning to clean up the clubhouse, and to hold a general get-together on Sunday afternoon, subject to a condition and safety assessment on Thu / Fri.  More details will follow in coming days.

  • Water levels are thankfully continuing to recede.
  • Water levels are currently an estimated 50 cm above the lower level floor and an estimated 226 cm below upper level floorboards.
  • These latest estimates are based on reading at the St Lucia River Gauge of 4.34 m at 18:12 hrs today (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml).
  • We are planning a Working bee on Saturday morning to clean up the clubhouse, and to hold a general get-together on Sunday afternoon, subject to a condition and safety assessment on Thu / Fri.

NOTICE (16) 08:00 hrs Tue 1 Mar 2022

  • We are all very pleased that water levels have continued to recede so far this morning despite the approaching high tide at approx 9.30am.
  • Water levels last night were stable despite the high tide about 9:00pm-10:00pm.
  • Water levels are currently an estimated 165 cm above the lower level floor and an estimated 111 cm below upper level floorboards.
  • These latest estimates are based on reading at the St Lucia River Gauge of between 5.44m to 5.49m between 06:07 hrs and 06:54 hrs today (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml).
  • We anticipate that we will hold a working bee on Saturday to clean up the clubhouse. More details and confirmaiton will follow in coming days.

NOTICE (15) 17:00 hrs Mon 28 Feb 2022

  • Water levels peaked today about an estimated 275 cm above the lower level floor and about an estimated 1 cm below upper level floorboards between 9:22am and 10:28am today.
  • These peak estimates are based on readings at the St Lucia River Gauge of 6.59m (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml).
  • Water levels appear to have gradually receeded during the day to an estimated 233 cm above the lower level floor and about an estimated 47 cm below upper level floorboards.
  • These latest estimates are based on reading at the St Lucia River Gauge of between 6.14 m and 6.19m between 16:33 hrs and 17:10 hrs today (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml).
  • Water levels will increase again this evening as we approach a 21:00 hrs high tide.  
  • It is still possible but unlikely that water levels this evening or tomorrow morning will exceed today's peak.
  • At this point in time it is possible but not likely that water levels in the next 1-3 days will rise above this morning's peak.
  • This afternoon local club members move some club boats to a more secure location. 
  • We anticipate that we will hold a working bee on Saturday to clean up the clubhouse. More details and confirmaiton to follow in coming days.

NOTICE (14) 10:00 hrs Mon 28 Feb 2022

  • Water levels continue to be just below upper level floorboards.
  • Water levels appear to have stabalised and have risen by about 5cm since 8:00am.
  • We do not expect any further significant increase of water levels now that high tide has passed.  
  • Reading at the St Lucia River Gauge is between 6.49 and 6.54m (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml).
  • At this point in time we do not expect water levels in the next 1-3 days to rise above this morning's peak.
  • This afternoon local club members will move some club boats to a more secure location.

NOTICE (13) 08:00 hrs Mon 28 Feb 2022

  • Water levels are just below upper level floorboards at 8:00am
  • Water levels are continuing to gradully rise.

  • Club boats are well above water levels..

NOTICE (12) 17:00 hrs Sun 27 Feb 2022

  • Local club members have now succesfully tethered all boats and have moved additional equipment and valuables from the clubhouse to safe storage.
  • Water levels are continuing to gradully rise. 
  • Water is estimated to be 185 cm above the lower level floor of the clubhouse based on 5.69 m reading at the St Lucia River Gauge (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml).
  • The estimated measurement from water levels to upper level floodboards is 91cm. See photo.
  • We expect no further action is needed at the club until waters subside.
  • Local club members are invited to check on boats when safe to do so.

NOTICE (11) 14:00 hrs Sun 27 Feb 2022

  • Additional limited assistance of local club members is requested at 15:00 hrs to tether all boats and move additional equipment from the clubhouse to safe storage.
  • Please do not attend if your home or personal safety is at risk.
  • Water levels now appear to be rising. This is of concern as low tide is estimated to be at 3:28pm today (Sunday)
  • Water is estimated to be 150 cm above the lower level floor of the clubhouse based on 5.34m reading at the St Lucia River Gauge (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml).

NOTICE (10) 12:00 hrs Sun 27 Feb 2022

  • Water levels appear to be stable or declining. See photo at 10:39am today (Sunday).
  • Water is estimatd to be 140 cm above the lower level floor of the clubhouse based on 5.24m reading at the St Lucia River Gauge (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml).
  • This water height is approx. 1.1m below upper level floorboards.
  • All boats have been now moved to the median strip in Hill End Tce as a precautoinary measure.
  • All club valuables and important equipment have been moved to storage as a precautionary measure.
  • All minor and less valuable equipment remaining in the clubhouse are stored above 0.4m above 2011 flood levels.
  • We do not expect any need for further assistance to moveme equipment today.

  • The average increase in water levels has decreased to less than 10cm per hour.
  • Members in the vicinity of the club have moved all boats to the median strip as a precautoinary measure.

  • Members in the vicinity of the club please have started moving boats to the median strip as a precautoinary measure.

  • Water is estimated to be 85 cm above the lower level of the clubhouse based on 4.69m at the St Lucia River Gauge (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml).

  • Measurement inside the lower door is 71cm.

  • Can all members in the vicinity of the club please be come to the club house at 6.00am to move boats to the median strip as a precautoinary measure.
  • We will continue to monitor flood levels and advise if further movement of equipment in the clubhouse is needed.

NOTICE (6) 21:00 hrs 26 Feb 2022

  • Water is started entering the lower level floor of the clubhouse atapprox 8:50pm this evening at a height of approx 3.84m against the St Lucia River Flood Gauge (see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65389/IDQ65389.540683.plt.shtml)

  • It appears that river levels may continue to rise gradually through the evening.
  • A club alert will be issued at 05:00 hrs tomorrow (Sunday) morning if we need to remove all remaining equipment before tomorrow morning's (Sunday) high tide at 7.42am.

  • Can all members in the vicinity of the club please be alert from 5am tomorrow if we need to move boats and equipment to higher ground.

NOTICE (5) 18:00 hrs 26 Feb 2022

  • Water is currently approx 2m away from the concrete apron at the lower level of the cluhouse.

  • It is expected that minor flooding will enter the lower level of the clubhouse on evening high tide at approx 6:50pm.
  • A further update will be issued at 20:00 hrs today. It is not extected that any further action will be needed at that time.

  • A club alert will be issued at 05:00 hrs tomorrow (Sunday) morning if we need to remove all remaining equipment before tomorrow morning's (Sunday) high tide at 7.42am.
  • Can all members in the vicinity of the club please be alert from 5am tomorrow if we need to move boats and equipment to higher ground.

NOTICE (4) 14:00 hrs 26 Feb 2022

  • Safety boats and all low level equipment has been moved to street Level and into the clubhouse were moved to street level at 11am-12pm today. Thank you to all who assisted.

  • It is expected that minor flooding will enter the lower level of the clubhouse on evening high tide at approx 6:50pm.
  • A further update will be issued at 6pm today. It is not extected that any further action will be needed at that time.

  • A club alert will be issued at 5am tomorrow (Sunday) morning if we need to remove all remaining equipment before tomorrow morning's (Sunday) high tide at 7.42am.

NOTICE (3) 09:30 26 Feb 2022

  • All members are invited to assist with moving lower level boats to street level at 11am today.

  • This morning's water level peaked about half way betwen the flag pole and the clubhouse.
  • We are concerned about the possibility of minor flooding into lower level of the clubhouse on this evening's or tomorrow morning's tide.

  • The club's Flood Plan has now be enacted.

  • Safety boats and all low level equipment has been moved to Street Level and into the clubhouse

  • Owners of private boats should relocate boats if possible.

  • A further update will be issued at 2pm today.

NOTICE (2) 06:00 26 Feb 2022

  • Minor flooding is being expereinced at St Lucia

  • The river is about 15cm above the sea wall 

NOTICE (1) 21:00 25 Feb 2022

  • With further forecast high rainfall in the Brisbane River catchment over the next 48 hours there is a possibility SBSC may need to activate our Flood Plan over the coming weekend (see https://www.sbsc.org.au/about/operational-plans/)

  • Recent advice from BOM for the lower Brisbane River issued: 7:00 pm EST on Friday 25 February 2022 is as follows:

  • The Brisbane River at Brisbane City is likely to reach the minor flood level (1.70 m) on the high tides through out the weekend, starting with high tides from Saturday morning. Depending on forecast rainfall, further rises to higher levels are possible during the weekend. Predictions will be refined as rainfall totals are observed

  • With high tides at approx. 2.15m at 6:32am tomorrow (Saturday) morning and 2.28m at 7:42am on Sunday morning there is a small chance that flood waters could enter the lower level of the SBSC club house either tomorrow (Saturday) morning or Sunday morning.

  • It is possible that we may also take precautionary action such as moving our powerboats to higher ground on Saturday afternoon.

  • West End Canoe Club have also been advised of the current situation.

  • Can members please monitor this page and their emails throughout the weekend in case we need assistance to implement the SBSC Flood Plan.
