Feedback on Saturdays exercise.
What worked well.
1. Organisation. Everyone knew what was happening and it was on time.
2. Realistic. Heart attacks are a serious and common injury.
3. Targeted. Learn to sail adults are one of our more vulnerable and higher risk groups.
4. Communication. Radio communication between the coach boat, safety boat, ramp officer and exercise coordinator was clear and effective
What could be improved
1. Distracted senior instructor. At the start of the exercise the senior instructor was distracted by a large floating log he was keen to retrieve. He ignored observations from his assistant instructor telling them not to worry because they had not capsized. He was driving away from the distressed boat.
2. When to administer first aid and where to go to. The adult instructor reacted emotionally to the severity of the situatiin when he saw the injured person clutching his chest. Time and action became front of mind compared to the 3 minutes drifting around looking for a semi submerged log. Plan A being the pontoon was abandoned in favour of the ramp.
3. Awareness of timely treatment, extraction points and assistance.
4. Who rings the ambulance and what is their eta to where
5. Do we have an incident management plan and does anyone care?
6. What actions would the adult need to take if the person was a) unconscious or not breathing or b) in the water and unable to get out or c) both a and b.
