Sailing Courses

Basic Sailing

Our next available Active Sailor Course will begin in September 2007

Never sailed before?  The club has an excellent reputation for the value and quality of its sail training operation.  The instructors involved are experienced sailors who have undergone instructor training to the Yachting Australia instructor level, the sailing dinghies provided are safe and well maintained, and classes are supported by experienced rescue boat staff.  The courses are strong1y directed towards the students being able to actively sail with the club on a regular basis.

Active Sailor Course:  This course is designed for people who are interested in becoming active sailors.  Each course is eight (8) weeks long, on consecutive Saturday mornings (from 10am until 12.30-1pm ). The students will be encouraged to continue sailing after the course completion by the offer of free boat use and coaching support.  Experienced sailors wanting to refresh their skills can be offered shorter courses by arrangement.

The courses are excellent value for money.  In the 8-week course, students receive individual instruction, boats and safety gear are provided and students receive club membership and insurance as part of the course.  Novice students should expect to sail with confidence by the end of this course.  As a result, these courses are in demand and are often booked out well in advance.

Topics included in the course are:

Rigging and de-rigging of sailing dinghies

How to safely launch and retrieve the dinghy

Basic knot and rudder craft

How to safely manage a capsize of the dinghy

Parts of a sailing dinghy

The “sailing circle”

Rules of the water

Introduction to competitive sailing.

Where Can a Sailing Course Lead?

Sailing is an exciting, enjoyable and satisfying experience, but students often ask where such skills can lead once the training is completed.   We have therefore assembled some pointers for potential students, as shown below,

1 .  By the end of each course, providing you attend a majority of the sessions, you should be able to sail confidently by yourself. Practice is important, of course, and you will be provided with the opportunity during and after the course to develop your skills using the variety of club boats, if you would like to participate in the club’s racing activities.

 2.  Our courses are principally designed to suit dinghy sailing skills. They are not designed for larger boats or multihulls, which need some different skills.  If you wish to sail the latter types of boats after completing our courses, you will need specific training in such boats.  We do not offer such courses.

 3.  Sailing skills are complex and can become a continuing learning experience.  They are similar to computer courses in that respect.

4.  One primary requirement for sailing is that you will need to have a reasonable level of physical fitness - you need to be able to swim reasonably well if the boat capsizes.  You will also need to have sufficient strength to pull yourself out of the water with wet clothing on.  This means that you must have a good level of upper body strength which matches your physique and weight.

5.  It is also a comparatively low cost sport.  Club membership costs are generally quite low, and you can often get fully rigged boats second-hand sailing dinghies which cost anything from $500 to $1500, depending on the type of boat.  Hiring our club boats initially is a very cheap option, and will allow you to learn which type of boat is most suitable for you.
